Cartoon Selfie
This was my first real time working with Illustrator. It was a challenge having to work with anchor points, and the layer (path) system, but after working for a while I was able to better understand how to use this program. For this particular assignment, we had to take a selfie of ourselves and make it look like a cartoon. The way I started to do this was by placing my selfie in Illustrator, then using the curvature tool to create my head, neck, ear, and shirt. I then added my eyes and eyebrows using this tool as well. For the iris of my eye, I created a circle using the ellipse tool, then filled it with a brown gradient. To get the exact shape I wanted, I used the pathfinder tool. I used the ellipse tool to create pupils and catchlights, too, and placed all these elements together to make my eyes. I added eyelashes with the pencil tool. The eyebrows were drawn with the curvature tool, and I added detail with the brush tool, by simply drawing small strokes onto the eyebrows. My glasses were, once again, made with the curvature tool, then filled with black. I drew two circles with white and lowered the opacity, in the lens areas to create the lenses. All that I had left to do was my hair, which I simply drew and filled with a gradient, then added detail by drawing with the pencil tool, my mouth, which I simply drew and filled with the colours I needed, and my nose. The nose was the most complicated part in my opinion. I tried to add detail and value to it, by adding highlights and darks with different coloured brushes. I think it turned out well for my first attempt at it, although one change I would make was to blend the different brush colours a bit more. This assignment was challenging in the beginning but became easier near the end.
